Pete Castañeda began painting seriously after 15 years of corporate stint occupying various positions in sales promotion, advertising and marketing.
In 1983, he joined the academe and his art flourished while teaching at the College of Fine Arts, University of the Philippines where he finished his BFA in 1959. A recipient of the Fernando Amorsolo Professional Chair in 1991 and the Jose Joya Professorial Chair in 1998, he launched two solo exhibitions: ‘Aquavisions’, Lopez Musem Gallery, 1993; and ‘Wetlands’, Gallery 139, 1998. Aside, he has had 40 group shows.
His proficiency in watercolours made him one of guest exhibitors in the 12th Annual Exhibition of the Asian Watercolor Confederation held in Singapore, 1997. Participating artists included those from most Asian countries and the USA. He won twice as one of top awardees in the Gallery Genesis Watercolor Painting Invitational Competition.
Castañeda, another founding member of the UP art group, grUPo, is now an Associate Professor in Visual Communication at the UP College of Fine Arts and the president of Agos Kulay (Watercolor Society of Manila). Pete, like the colourful fish in his art, is happily swimming in his own waters.
