Antonio P. Doctor, with his Bachelor of Fine Arts, magna cum laude, from the University of Santo Tomas, Unesco Fellowship from a university in Thailand, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, U.S.A., is perhaps, the most academically prepared member and one of the founders of the Philippine Artists Group of Canada.
Doctor’s stint with the academe continued when he became Art Head Teacher in Letran College in Manila in the early 50’s, an art teacher in his alma mater, U.S.T.,in 1957-58 and a Visiting Professor at the University of the Philippines College of Fine Arts in 1976-1977. In Canada, with his impressive credentials as an artist and art educator, he was readily taken to arts faculty of the University of Windsor rising from the ranks to become Associate Professor and subsequently, Director of the university’s Department of Fine Arts.
Tony is not just a prominent academician, a multi awarded civic leader but also an ardent believer in the Philippine national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. He became a Knight of Rizal and the founding Chapter Commander of the Windsor OKR, the very first chapter of the knighthood in Canada. Along the way, he garnered a number of awards and distinctions from the order and was appointed the first Over-all Commander for Canada by the Supreme Council in Manila.
Doctor is one of the founding fathers and a most distinguished member of the Philippine Artists Group.
